It was jam-packed night at the Mercury Lounge, with two stellar performances by Monograms and The Wytches.
Frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ian Jacobs aka Monograms opened up with Tidal Wave, the first single off of his Fader EP. Hailing from Brooklyn, I must say that he put on for his city pretty well. His artistry is not quite like any other, being that he curated the whole set by himself. His music fuses the elements of garage & indie rock, with psych sounds, and electronic drum beats. To add to the ambience in the room, a video filled with trippy effects acted as his backdrop; I’m all for adding cool visual effects to your show. As his set kept going, he slowed it down a bit with ‘Summertime Comes & I’m Your Fall’, a melancholic tune. After tonight, I’ve become a fan of Monograms. From his creativity on stage to the powerful guitar presence, his show is one you wouldn’t want to miss.
Up next was the London trio, The Wytches. For some band members, it was their first time in NYC, so they were pretty excited. The band opened up with the 2012 single titled ‘Digsaw’, a song with guitar riffs similar to Nirvana’s ‘Bleach’. Their live show was full of energy, very hypnotic with just a touch of emo. The Wytches are a band you won’t easily forget.
