HOMETOWN HEROES RETURN - PHANTOGRAM AT UPSTATE CONCERT HALL

When you return home, there are always plenty of things on the to do list. You have to see and reminisce with family and friends, talk about your travels, rest and relax, and take care of any chores around the house that have been neglected. If you’re a nationally touring band that has a new album out, going home also involves playing a concert. The concert took place at Upstate Concert Hall which is a small venue for Phantogram, as they wanted to do something special for everyone.

Starting the night off though were Brooklyn’s We Are Scientists. The trio played a non-stop no frills 45-minute rock and roll set, much to the delight of the crowd. Each song seemingly flowed right into the next one, which made it seem like the music never stopped. These three have a lot of potential and being on this tour is definitely going to help them gain the exposure they need and deserve. Be on the lookout for them to rise to bigger venues on their own as the year continues.

With a quick intro from local radio station WEQX, Phantogram came out after a short break and had quite the light show involving strobes and a lot of movement. Having been around for ten years now, Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter know how to put on a show. Their interactions on stage never seem forced and are a joy to watch. It seemed even more so at Upstate Concert Hall because of the hometown feel, the show had. Multiple times they both thanked the crowd for the support they got early in their career.

Each song got a great reaction from the audience. During “Answer” the entire audience lit up the room with cell phones and lighters. During “Mouthful of Diamonds” they sang every word back to the band. During the closing “When I’m Small” you could have heard a pin drop. The trio encore of “Cruel World,” “Fall in Love,” and “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” let the crowd go home happy. Sarah and Josh hung out for some time after the show hanging with friends, family, and fans. Home town shows are definitely special, and Phantogram felt the love all night.
