LEOPOLD AND HIS FICTION PLAY BOWERY ELECTRIC

The Austin-based, Leopold and His Fiction has been on tour promoting its newest album, Darling Destroyer, since mid-January.  To say that their schedule has been packed is an understatement.  They have played shows almost every night and zigzagged across the country.  We were fortunate enough to spend some time with them before their show Thursday night.

While taking portraits with frontman Daniel Leopold and keyboardist Jeremy Holmsley, the guys spoke about how easy it was to tour together.  There is no drama amongst the foursome and despite the lack of privacy, they’re not tired of each other yet.  When you watch Leopold and His Fiction live, you understand why there has been no nonsense on tour.  The foursome just clicks.

Leopold and His Fiction closed Bowery Electric with a soulful, chest-crushing set.  Leopold tore across the stage playing new music that is an ode to his Detroit heritage as Holmsley trampled the keys.  Mark Henne rocked out on drums with Alexander “Z” Lynch on bass and vocals.  The group performed the opening track “Cowboy” and the crowd lost it.  All you could see was people dancing and flipping hair. Then they pivoted with the rhythmic and dreamy “Better Off Alone.” The crowd had just fallen into a soft sway when the song quickly shifted to head-banging intensity at the bridge.  That intensity continued into “Saturday,” a track that Leopold calls “aggressive” and “the catalyst of the whole album.”

The fourth full-length is equal parts Motown and garage rock. It is honest, gritty, uplifting, and a perfectly crafted journey of self-reflection.  Leopold wrote the majority of songs as he waited for the birth of his daughter Ava (who is featured in some of their music videos).  Leopold and His Fiction will be on tour through mid-March.
