WHAT EVERYONE’S THINKING ABOUT AJR

As snippets of songs off of New York City-based band AJR’s newest album, What Everyone’s Thinking, filled the room, the band’s youngest member, Jack Met, ran on stage. Wearing his infamous fur-lined trapper hat, Jack pumped up the crowd as his two older brothers, Ryan and Adam, joined him – AJR was here to play.

AJR took the stage with a mighty force during back-to-back shows at Gramercy Theater this weekend right off the release of the music video for their song “Weak.” These shows were a part of their “What Everyone’s Thinking” tour in support of their newest EP with the same name and their first headlining tour ever. After finding out almost every show on the tour sold out, I wasn’t surprised.

The first time I listened to an AJR song in full was when I went on my first date with my boyfriend and we listened to “Weak” sharing ear buds on a subway [also the setting of their music video for this song], feeling like we were the only people there. I fell in love immediately with that song and constantly have it on repeat remembering that night and wondering how three young guys could be so accurate about love.

Not only are they great musicians but they are also great performers. They played everything off of their newest album as well as a mixture of songs from the rest of their repertoire. They took a moment to show how they create a remix and created a New York City themed remix on the spot, sirens and all. They got chummy with the crowd during their song “No Grass Today,” coming to play acoustically in the middle of the crowd surrounded by a sea of fans. They came back for more during their encore as they performed a crazy drum interlude during “Weak” within the crowd in the dark with light-up sticks.

With the looks of a boy band but the sound of something so uniquely different, AJR hits on a new version of pop for tweens, teens, and adults alike. Dance-y and animated yet passionate and lined with elegant storytelling, their songs are relatable and artistic.
