It is not every day that you see a line of people wrapped around the block to see the opening band. Stop Light Observations is no “opening band” though. The five-person outfit that hails from Charleston, South Carolina packed Mercury Lounge for the late show Saturday night.
A few songs into the Stop Light Observations’ set a guy turned to his buddy and asked how can these guys only be the openers? To answer his question, we’re not really sure. A Stop Light Observations’ show is more of a spiritual revival than a concert. Keyboardist and vocalist, John Keith “Cubby” Culbreth, drops wisdom from his keys as he introduces and gives color to each song. Lead singer Will Blackburn wails on the mic as the rest of the members harmonize and feed off of his energy. And did we mention the adorable dog that chills by Luke Wither’s feet during the performances?

The group got together when Cubby asked guitarist, Louis Duffie if he wanted to start a band. Ten plus years later we get the benefit of seeing these southern charmers live. Their music is a hybrid among southern, classic and electro rock with hints of revival, indie and folk. And you never know what “feel” is coming next. They’ll play “Security,” a sarcastic song about what people really need in life to feel happy and then transition to the haunting, “Dinosaur Bones.”

Stop Light Observations released their album, Toogoodoo, in August of 2016 and is on tour on the east coast through early May. If you missed them at Mercury Lounge, you can see them again at the end of the month at NYC’s Charleston Affair Pre-Party at Brooklyn Bowl. Some of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to College of Charleston School of the Arts.
