From the good seats, we took in the Roger Waters concert at Barclays Center on Tuesday night. The air was a bit heavier than normal in and around the Brooklyn arena as the city remembered 9-11 for the 16th year. But as soon as Roger Waters and his tremendous band started their mind-blowing set, we felt a sense of peace and unity that only an artist such as Waters can bring.
Since the production of the Us + Them tour is so fine-tuned, that even the most technical Broadway show would be impressed, the set-lists have remained static for the whole run of dates and for good reason; for every measure of music there is an equal amount of art and imagery that propels each moment into the stratosphere. Whether it was Roger bringing a local group of school-children onstage to perform “Another Brick In The Wall pt. 2,” or the sinister images of Der Trump as a whining baby, actual quotes from the POTUS, or with a bare chested Putin during “Pigs,” we were bombarded with visuals that are still floating in the ether somewhere.

As expected, the set was full of Pink Floyd classics such as an overly-emotional “Wish You Were Here,” which had most of the arena with tears in there eyes as they remembered that horrendous day years before. Every single song was an actual highlight (seriously, I could not pick if asked, a favorite from the night), but the crowd would eat up epic takes on “Dogs,” “Time,” “Money,” “Brain Damage,” “Welcome To The Machine” and the rousing closer “Comfortably Numb.”

Roger’s newest solo album, Is This The Life We Really Want?, also was featured and songs like “Picture This,” “When We Were Young” and the stunning “The Last Refugee” all fit in seamlessly with the more well-known hits, but provided us with prevalent songs that take notice of todays’ immigrant and political issues we all know.

Roger, on the bass most of the night, sometimes switching to acoustic guitar, was flanked by one impressive band including Jess & Holly from Lucius, and were worth the admission alone with their pristine harmonies and powerhouse vocals. Due to an injury, My Morning Jacket’s own Bo Koster is filling in for the rest of the tour, and didn’t miss a beat nailing down the legendary Pink Floyd synths and looked like he was having the time of his life doing it. The rest of the band was so solid that it could have been Pink Floyd in their prime and you wouldn’t have known the difference.

After coming out for the encore, the crowd let Mr. Waters have it with everything they had and screamed and hollered for so long that Roger had to take a second to collect himself as tears rolled down his face from the sheer impact of the moment. He would tell us that it was a special show, on a hallowed date and that it was a very special night for all involved.
