Last weekend, Brooklyn synthpop legends Porches, capped off their North American tour in support of their third full-length album, The House, with a three-stop mini-tour in New York City. Predictably, Aaron Maine and company sold-out each of the shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg, Bowery Ballroom, and The Hall at Elsewhere. I got the chance to witness the indie pop-rock legends-in-the-making on their second night back in the city, at Bowery Ballroom.
Throughout the evening, Maine bashfully thanked the audience and acted like he was surprised by the turn out, as if Porches has not been on the receiving end of mass critical acclaim and admiration from the NYC contingent. (Perhaps if I had brought a longer lens I could have snapped a shot of him blushing). Meanwhile, him and the group plowed through a perfect set of dream pop, proving all of his yea-sayers correct. From song to song, there was not a dull moment and the crowd made their approval known as each song’s intro began. One particular moment of excitement came when Maine’s father Peter, who had enjoying the show from the stage-left staircase all night, took the stage to perform “Understanding” off of the band’s newest LP.

As Porches proves time and time again, innovation still has a place in popular music. As the group preps to take the show on the road for a European tour, the band’s fanbase in New York City remains in a state of awe after a masterfully crafted weekend of shows.
