FRANZ FERDINAND TAKES ON A SOLD-OUT BROOKLYN STEEL

For the second night in a row Franz Ferdinand sold out Brooklyn Steel.  Tailored in black and amidst heavy applause, the Scottish outfit that takes its name from Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, took the stage and immediately launched into “Always Ascending.”

Franz Ferdinand has a long history of delivering performances that make you embrace mass delirium and chaos.  Lead singer, Alex Kapranos still strikes poses, does split kicks off of amplifiers and stirs the crowd with words of riot-worthy encouragement.  Drummer, Paul Thomson continues to hammer a deafening march for his bandmates.  They have had multiple UK top 20 hits, been nominated for various Grammy awards, won two Brit Awards, and for over a decade and a half, been performing with the vigor of a 1970s punk band.

Since their last release, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action, the band shed guitarist and keyboardist, Nick McCarthy and added two fresh faces- keyboardist Julian Corrie and guitarist Dino Bardot.  The crowd did not feel the loss as the quintet powered through the setlist comprising of “Glimpse of Love,” “Lazy Boy,” “Michael,” and “Darts of Pleasure” and “Huck and Jim.” The cement walls in Brooklyn Steel came down when the band performed their most famous track, “Take Me Out.”  The night served as a reminder that Franz Ferdinand is indie dance funk at its finest.
