KING GIZZARD AND THE LIZARD WIZARD CLOSE OUT FRENZIED BK STEEL RUN

Walking into Brooklyn Steel on Sunday night there was a buzz in the air as it seemed a good portion of the crowd had been there the whole weekend. As Friday was already discussed right here on Pancakes and Whiskey, I’ll briefly mention that people were still talking about the delight and absolute rowdiness of the crowd on Saturday when they closed with “Head On/Pill”. Many were curious to see how the setlist would vary again and while it wasn’t much, every show changes just enough to not make it crazy that fanatics went all three nights.

Each night was started by Amyl and The Sniffers who were just an absolute dream to not only photograph but watch as they took over the venue. Amyl is a lightning bolt of energy and does not stop moving ever. She egged on the crowd constantly to give her just as much movement back to her, and the crowd gladly reciprocated. To end their set she jumped in the crowd while the band continued thrashing along. The band is the perfect openers for King Gizzard as it sets the night as a high energy affair for a crowd that is ready for it.

Amyl and the Sniffers

Once the seven-headed monster known as King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard took the stage the audience absolutely lost it. Mosh pits and crowd surfers were constant the rest of the night. They have one of the most loyal fan bases in rock music right now and everyone was there hanging on every note and lyric to see if the song was transitioning directly into another one or not. When that did happen an eruption would swell throughout Brooklyn Steel. Stu mentioned how big of a blast it was that they got to hang around in Brooklyn and New York City for three straight days and how they felt spoiled by it. As it was time to wrap the show up they brought out Amyl and the Sniffers to join in one last song to say goodbye to Brooklyn: ACDC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, which Amyl said was the most Aussie thing they could have done. The 11 musicians on stage played an incredibly fast version of the song that was amazing to listen to and watch the crowd’s reaction to it all. I have seen King Gizzard in a number of venues the last five years or so and it’s amazing to watch how they can just keep controlling larger and larger crowds. It’s going to be funny when they headline MSG one day and we’ll think back on this run and remember how special it was to watch them in such small confines.
