TOKYO POLICE CLUB SHUTS DOWN WARSAW

When you attend a Tokyo Police Club concert, sometimes it’s hard to tell who’s having more fun, the fans or the band. The joy that is evident when these guys play together is reflected in the tunes & lyrics of their style of infectious indie rock; a music that their fans have enjoyed since their first record was released almost 11 years ago.

The band’s current US stops represent the second part of the tour supporting the release of their fourth full LP, TPC released last October. They are supported by local Brooklyn favorites, Honduras, and fellow Canadians, Dizzy. Tonight, March 12th, Tokyo Police Club hit Warsaw in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Dizzy is made up of 3 brothers (Charlie, MacKenzie, and Alex Spencer) and vocalist Katie Munshaw. Their moody pop opening to the show was apropos as the crowd was still warming up after coming in from the cold. Munshaw’s incredible vocals evoke a dreamlike atmosphere as she weaved songs from their debut album Baby Teeth release just last August. They will be back in NYC to later this summer so stay tuned.

Dizzy

If you’re familiar at all with the indie punk rock scene in NYC, you’re definitely familiar with Honduras. I’ve seen them open for several great acts, most recently Interpol at the final House of Vans show last year. They look and sound like they would be as comfortable in a dingy New York City dive bar as they would be in a garage in southern California. They have mellowed a bit over the years, but I understand it’s hard to maintain that punk attitude as you get older. While I definitely appreciate the grungy lyrics, I most enjoy them when bouncing to their instrumental jams and they did not disappoint.

Honduras

When Tokyo Police Club finally hit the stage to the roar of approval from the audience, they hit us right away with “New Blues,” the first track from last year’s TPC. The first half of the set consisted mostly of songs from their latest record and with “Favourite Colour” and the instrumental “Zap” thrown in while the second half were purely oldies, mostly from the Champ LP but going as far back as 2006!! As usual, the band came out to chat and hang out with their fans at the merch booth after the show. Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the release of Champ so let’s see if they do something special to commemorate the occasion!
