Miya Folick is the musical goddess of my dreams. She emits the perfect combination of punk-rock coolness along with a soft gracefulness. Her show at Elsewhere as part of her tour promoting her fall 2018 release, Premonitions, was nothing short of amazing.
Opening the show that night was Brooklyn-based dream rock band, Barrie. Watching each bandmate vibe with each other on stage showed how much fun they have together and in turn got me excited about their set. Their latest release, “Clovers” easily puts you in the mood to run through a field on a sunny day.

Folick is turning heads with her genre bending musical style, As she plays, it’s seemingly effortless the way she stays compose throughout her performance. She does show how humble she is at one point even saying how she felt like an imposter in her current state and that somehow eventually everyone was going to see through her.

Premonitions is a beautiful diary of emotions turned into art that has touched anyone who listens. Fan favorite, “Thingamajig” is hands down one of the most beautiful pieces music that touches on the anxiety if being you. Folick paused during the song to make a speech about not letting the thought that you’re not good enough get in the way of being your true self.

There’s a quote on her Facebook page that touched me: “I play music because forming thoughts into sounds blends emotional and rational thought in a way that turns me on.” I didn’t know the feeling I had about music could be put into words until I read that quote and her music truly showcases exactly that.

Folick said that Elsewhere was the biggest venue that she had ever headlined before – I know next time around she’ll be playing in front of even bigger crowds and there is no one more deserving.
