BOYGENIUS WAS SPECTACULAR AT MGM MUSIC HALL FENWAY

Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back in Town” blared from the speakers and all of MGM Music Hall Fenway sang along while we waited for boygenius, aka the boys, to take the stage. Once the lights went out the trio of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus appeared on screen from backstage singing “Without You Without Them.” The sold out crowd sang it with them, as they did every song all night. As soon as it was over the three of them ran across the stage and went right into “$20.”

The 22 song show, even with plenty of slower songs, never seemed to slow down. Watching them just be best friends on stage, giving little nods and smiles to each other when a riff or solor was taken or when a lyric was sung a certain way was so much fun to watch. They played both the record and boygenius in full. What was a surprise for everyone though was the premiere of the new song “Black Hole.” After the song was over it was announced on stage that a new EP the rest is coming out in a couple of weeks.

Of course each member played one of their own songs in the middle of the set, letting each of them shine with the backing of the full band and the other two members behind them. They all share the spotlight so graciously and in this day and age to watch three superstars do that is wonderful. The set ended with “Not Strong Enough” with one last flourish of lights, which were great all night. The crowd beckoned them back out very quickly, making the encore break extremely short.

The two song encore started with just the boys on stage for “Ketchum, ID” and then the full band came back out for “Salt in the Wound.” All of a sudden they were all beckoning someone to come on stage an none other than Hozier came out to help them close the show out in spectacular fashion. It was already a perfect evening, but it like a bolt of lightning to end it.

Palehound opened the show with a ten song, wasting little time at all during the slow, while boygenius watched from the side of the stage beaming from ear to ear. El Kempner kept stating how it was weird to play in front of so many people, but the whole band looked quite comfortable the entire set. If you are going to any of the shows on this very short tour, make sure to not miss their opening set.
