NEW ENGLAND'S FINEST: BOSTON CALLING SHINES AGAIN OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

As is tradition, right by Harvard Square on Memorial Day Weekend, thousands of music fans come together at New England’s premiere music festival for a weekend of fun, partying and great music. Despite some tempered expectations going into this year, the lineup proved why it’s worth coming back – Boston Calling books artists ahead of its time.

The weekend featured a handful of artists we’re keeping out eye on. Rock band Beach Weather rocked the red stage with a raucous crowd energy reserved for bands you’d catch around sunset. With style and swagger, they’re definitely a band to keep an eye on.

Up and comers The Thing and Maris both played their first festivals – a testament to the festival booking artists they can help elevate along side their featured local artists. Maris was a hit all weekend long and was spotted at a lot of different sets as well as in the media tent. Meanwhile, catching The Thing felt like early Cage the Elephant meets Pond. They are a part of NYC’s revitalized rock scene (see: Geese) that should have any alt rock fan excited for the future.

In addition to artists to keep an eye on, acts like Royel Otis, Chappell Roan and Renee Rapp have all exploded in popularity since Boston Calling released its lineup. Royel Otis is Australias newest hit export, and included their now viral cover of “Murder on The Dancefloor” in their set. Chappell Roan and Renee Rapp felt like the biggest sets of the weekend, even moreso than established acts like Hozier, The Killers and Ed Sheeran. The only thing that compares to Chappell’s crowd this year was Noah Kahan’s last year – a sea of 40,000 people singing every word.

In truth, when Boston Calling first announced its lineup this year, our eyes didn’t quite light up. But after checking out everything the festival had to offer – local acts, up and comers, a little bit of country and established stars – it surpassed our expectations and reminded us what makes this New England’s elite festival.
