I’ve always questioned the sanity of people that really love The Shining—myself included—so I didn’t know what to make of it when Wild Pink sent us over their track “Is This Hotel Haunted?” Could they have written a song about this movie? “When I said I wanted to talk to you telepathically,” they begin, “I just wanted to know if you really think we’d make it out in safety.”
Over quick paced pop punk, a Weezer by way of The Feelies, the lyrics— schizophrenic, with no real frame of reference—are like a “family slowly going insane together.” With a solid rhythm section and some really great guitar lines, I’m not sure it matters if they’re referencing The Shining or not.
The track comes from their 2 Songs EP available on Bandcamp (The cover is a watercolor of Gary Oldman’s Dracula), and is backed by “True Detectives,” a song that may or may not believe that “time is a flat circle.”
Pancakes & Whiskey is happy to premiere Wild Pink’s “Is This Hotel Haunted?”
