SKYES RIP THROUGH A BLISTERING SET AT MERCURY LOUNGE

Ripping through a blistering set at Mercury Lounge on Wednesday, Skyes wowed us all. I had previously seen Skyes play a set a few months back and I was, if not even more wowed by their performance. Their synth-pop sound complete with soaring vocals from lead singer Dallin Knightly and killer guitar work from Dan Tirer, who also were involved in a romantic relationship for 7 years, and their ultimate breakup was the catalyst for the band’s creation. Many say that heartbreak is often times the best music comes forth, and I can say this is one of those times. Dallin’s powerhouse voice, which I previously likened to Lady Gaga, was perfection here, elevating the pop chorus to new heights.

They also had tons of energy. I found myself shooting back and forth on each side of the stage, first focusing on the keyboardist who was a mass of flinging arms and flailing hair, then over to Dallin who often times came right up to the edge of the stage and got so into the emotion and delivery of the songs, then over to the drummer who of course was banging away, then back to Dan who was ripping it up on guitar. Skyes might be just under the radar for now, but that won’t be for long. They’re announcing tour dates in steady fashion, playing an upcoming shows for Communion Philly. Be on the lookout for more in the near future.
