ELLIE GOULDING SHINES AT HAMMERSTEIN BALLROOM

British indie-pop singer Ellie Goulding is barely three albums into her career, but the 28-year old has already established herself as one of the premiere recording artists in the top 40 world of music. Her most recent album, Delirium, came out on September 17th, and has helped cement her as one of the premiere acts in pop. She’s had appearances performing at the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show recently and on Wednesday night, the American Express UNSTAGED show at Hammerstein, a live-streamed concert special directed by Scarlett Johansson.

While the sound wasn’t as loud as expected, Ellie’s performance along with her band was pretty top notch for a pop singer. She opened up her set with “Outside” and “Something In the Way You Move” off the new album before re-visiting Halcyon Days with “Ritual,” “Goodness Gracious,”  and “Figure 8.” After heading back to the Delirium part of the set with “Keep On Dancin’” and “Don’t Need Nobody,” Ellie emerged on a stage in the middle of the audience for an intimate, musically stripped down performance of her own ballads in “Explosions” and the 50 Shades of Grey hit “Love Me Like You Do.”

After a return back to the main stage it was time to open up the catalog of the hits. The audience exploded in excitement as the familiar opening sample riff of “Anything Could Happen” began to play. After closing out the initial set with chart toppers “I Need Your Love” and the club remix favorite in “Lights,” Ellie returned to close out with an encore of “On My Mind” and “Let It Burn.” Like any pop concert, the performance wasn’t complete without the theatrics of a bubble cannon and confetti showers, but who doesn’t love those, right?
