Let’s be real: it can be a little hard to get patriotic when something as ridiculously bad as our election is happening right now. But that doesn’t mean we won’t still be lighting things on fire and cheering! It’s the American way – and it’s also the perfect time to shake off our anger with some live music. We’ve got a whole batch of Pancake Picks for this Fourth of July week, so get out in the city for a few nights and celebrate your independence from all the bullshit on TV!

4th of July Freedom Bash @ Mercury Lounge – Tonight’s the night! This Fourth of July, Mercury Lounge has a whole post-fireworks Freedom Bash in the works. Head over at 10pm to check out the aptly-named newcomers The U.S. Americans, The Constituency, and Kevin McWha Steele.

Spain-Brooklyn Music Series @ Baby’s All Right – If you want your fourth to be a little less fourthy, there’s actually a Spain-Brooklyn Music Series show happening at Baby’s All Right tonight too. The event will feature artists Polock, Izal, Der Panther, DJ Timothy Allen, and DJ Vortex, as well as a live painting by artist Carla Fuentes.

Gymshorts @ Baby’s All Right – Nothing says freedom like sneaking out to hit some rock shows this week! Gymshorts will be bringing their punky garage rock to Baby’s All Right on Tuesday, along with Haybaby, Fletcher C. Johnson, and The Soaks.

Aki Takahashi @ Le Poisson Rouge – For something really special, check out Aki Takahashi at LPR this Tuesday, a true pro who has been studying piano since age 5. The classical goddess will be performing the music of Cage, Feldman, and Satie, joined by Margaret Lancaster and David Shively.

Secret Weapons & Phoebe Ryan @ Bowery Ballroom – Come early for one of NYC’s fastest rising idie-pop bands in Secret Weapons and then stay for the always alluring Phoebe Ryan, making this a great mid-week choice.

David Bazan @ MHOW – An indie rock songwriter hailing from Seattle, David Bazan was best known as the creative force behind Pedro the Lion and the lead singer of Headphones. The seasoned singer will be playing solo at Music Hall of Williamsburg this Thursday, along with multi-instrumentalist Laura Gibson.

Nite Jewel @ Baby’s All Right – Nite Jewel, aka singer-songwriter Ramona Gonzalez, will be treating Baby’s All Right to her chillwave PBR&B vibes this Thursday – right after the release of her newest full-length, Liquid Cool. Also on the bill are Starchild & The New Romantic and Sasha Jan Rezzie.

Brooklyn Bowl’s 7th Anniversary with Talib Kweli – Hit up one of our favorite venues for their 7th Birthday with a special edition of Bowl Train with Talib Kweli. There’s also a wicked 7 dollar drink and food menu with wings, pizza and more!

Jessy Lanza, DJ Taye @ The Bowery Ballroom – You can catch Canadian electronic songstress Jessy Lanza this Friday, fresh off the release of her brand new LP, Oh No. She’ll be joined by DJ Tave at the Bowery Ballroom.

Class Actress @ Baby’s All Right – Elizabeth Vanessa Harper is best known by her stage name, Class Actress, and will be filling up Baby’s with her glamorous synthpop sound this Friday.

4Knots Music Festival @ South Street Seaport – 4Knots is back again at the seaport, and it’s also FREE. Bands are a plenty with Guided By Voices, The Strumbellas, Mothers, Girlpool, Diane Coffee, Protomartyr and many more.

Oneida @ The Knitting Factory – Wrap up your trippy week with something psychedelic at the Knitting Factory this Saturday. Local kraut/psych/noise rockers Oneida are sure to put on a wild show, along with Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band.

Nothing @ The Bowery Ballroom – American rock band Nothing are also playing this Saturday with a good lineup in tow, including fellow rockers Citizen and Culture Abuse, as well as harp/synth duo Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler. You can check them out at The Bowery Ballroom.

Wussy @ The Bowery Ballroom – And Sunday brings us indie rock five-piece Wussy, who just released a few new tracks on the April EP, Ceremony. They’ll be taking on The Bowery Ballroom with The Paranoid Style. Have a safe and BS-free Fourth of July week!
