PANCAKE PICKS: THE BEST SHOWS OF THE WEEK FOR 8-1-16

In 1599, William Shakespeare wrote about a pancake-loving knight in As You Like It (Act 1, Scene 2), who “swore by his honor they were good pancakes, and swore by his honor the mustard was naught.” We don’t know what the hell the whole mustard thing was about – but we swear by our honor that these are some equally good Pancake Picks. Check out the best shows of the week below!

Monday

Jim Breuer and The Loud & Rowdy @ The Knitting Factory – When a comedian as funny as Jim Breuer debuts a heavy metal album, people tend to listen – and in this case, proceed to bang their heads wildly. Check out Breuer’s awesome metal concoction at the Knitting Factory tonight.

Tuesday

Beirut @ Prospect Park Bandshell – After 2015’s much-loved No No No, it’s no surprise fans are looking forward to catching Beirut in the city this week. Head over to Prospect Park Bandshell on Tuesday to check them out.

Langhorne Slim & The Law @ Brooklyn Bowl – Alt/folk rocker Langhorne Slim and his band, The Law, will be playing Brooklyn Bowl this Tuesday. Fans of the singer-songwriter can expect to hear material from the group’s latest album, The Spirit Moves, released in 2015.

The Last Shadow Puppets @ Terminal 5 – An English supergroup that can trace its roots back to bands like Arctic Monkeys and The Rascals, The Last Shadow Puppets are worth catching and will be playing Terminal 5 this Tuesday. They’ll be joined by opener Cameron Avery (of Tame Impala and Pond).

Wednesday

Sophistafunk @ Brooklyn Bowl – Syracuse-based hip-hop and funk group Sophistafunk will be hitting Brooklyn Bowl this Wednesday for an energetic set. The party will officially start with openers Swift Technique and Jounce.

A Silent Film @ Rough Trade – Oxford alt-rock duo A Silent Film will be bringing their classic, piano rock sound to Rough Trade this Wednesday. (And if you can’t make it then, the guys are also playing Mercury Lounge on Friday).

Thursday

Everything Everything @ MHOW – English indie rockers Everything Everything have been doing their eclectic thing since ’07 and are still pretty fresh off the release of Get To Heaven, so they’re sure to bring a good show this Thursday. Head over to Music Hall of Williamsburg to see what they’ve been up to.

Dr. John @ Brooklyn Bowl – Six-time Grammy winner Dr. John will be playing Brooklyn Bowl for Aaron Neville’s 75th Birthday Concert this Thursday – along with Dumpstaphunk, Eric Krasno, Ivan Neville, George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners. We got to see Dr. John last summer and he really puts on a great show, so get on over there!

Friday

Dinosaur Jr @ Rough Trade – If you like rock, then this shouldn’t take much convincing. The one and only Dinosaur Jr are playing Rough Trade this Thursday, along with opener Those Pretty Wrongs. (Dinosaur Jr were another really memorable show last summer, and damn, can J Mascis shred.)

Saturday

Juliette Lewis @ Brooklyn Bowl – Badass actor and singer Juliette Lewis is playing in Brooklyn this week, where fans can enjoy a glimpse of her rock-and-roll persona onstage. The show’s going down at Brooklyn Bowl this Thursdsay.

Frankie Cosmos @ The Bowery Ballroom – Wrap up your week with NYC-born songstress Frankie Cosmos, aka Greta Kline, who’s playing The Bowery Ballroom this Saturday. Warehouse is opening and it’s sure to be a cool gig. Have fun!
